Q: Is it expensive living in Sweden?
A: It depends. First of all, you have to pay
attention to the exchange rate. It has fluctuated quite a
bit over the past several years, so be sure to check
here or
here for
the most recent rates.
In general you can expect most things
to be a bit more expensive than in the US. Groceries, bus
fare, clothing and the like might cost 10%-20% more than
you're accustomed to. Alcohol is especially expensive in
Sweden due to heavy taxes.
Some things, however, are quite
affordable. For instance, a train ride to Stockholm can
cost you as little as 60Kr (about $7.50), and a beer in a
student nation could cost 19Kr ($2.50).
Q:How cold is it in Uppsala?
A:
Temperatures in Uppsala range from roughly 25C (80F) at
height of summer to -20C (-5F) in the middle of winter.
Q: Where exactly is Uppsala?
A: Uppsala lies in Uppland, Sweden, about 50 miles
(80km) northwest of Stockholm.
Q: Are Swedes cold or anti-social people?
A: In general, no. Any reputation Swedes may have for
being cold probably comes from their reserved behavior in
public life. People in Sweden tend to conduct themselves in a very
conservative manner in public and generally try not to
draw attention to themselves. In more personal settings,
however, things tend towards quite the opposite. Swedes are
often very warm, direct and humorous people once you get to
know them.
Q: I don't speak Swedish, is that a problem?
A: No. While being able to read and speak Swedish can
definitely be useful (and fun!) virtually all Swedes speak
excellent English.
